Federal Framework

Online gambling in the US is governed by a patchwork of federal and state laws:

  • UIGEA (2006) โ€” Restricts payment processors from handling unlicensed gambling transactions. Does not make gambling itself illegal.
  • Wire Act (1961) โ€” Restricts interstate sports wagering. Courts have limited its scope to sports betting only.
  • PASPA repeal (2018) โ€” Supreme Court struck down the federal sports betting ban, allowing states to legalise sports wagering independently.
